 What is the difference between waterproof and water resistant? 

The difference between water resistant and waterproof rainwear is how much rain it can withstand before water begins to seep in through the fabric. This is due to its water column, which is a measure of how much water pressure the material can withstand. Clothing with a  water column rating of 10.000 mm withstands light rain and moderate snow. With a higher water column rating the garment can withstand persistent heavy rain and wet snow. When choosing rainwear keep in mind that if you are going to sit down or have a backpack on you, the water column needs to be higher so the added pressure on the garment does not allow water to penetrate.
